Defender
Anyone whose role is to protect systems, networks, and data from attack, spanning SOC analysts, incident responders, detection engineers, and security architects. The defender's perspective frames how security work is approached.
The defender is the counterpart to the attacker: the person or team working to prevent, detect, and respond to threats. The term captures a mindset as much as a job, thinking about how to protect assets, anticipate attacker behavior, and apply controls. Defenders face an asymmetry (they must cover everything while an attacker needs one way in), which shapes strategies like defense in depth and cost asymmetry.

- A SOC analyst monitoring for and responding to threats as a defender.
- A detection engineer building rules to catch attacker behavior.
