Short-Term Containment
Immediate actions taken to stop an active incident from spreading or worsening, isolating hosts, blocking IPs, disabling accounts, while longer-term containment and eradication are planned.
Short-term containment is the fast response to a live incident: cut the attacker's access right now, isolate compromised hosts from the network, disable affected accounts, block known-bad indicators at the perimeter. Speed matters more than completeness at this stage. It is followed by long-term containment (more thorough, durable measures) and eradication. As an IR operations practice, short-term containment is what limits damage while the team gathers context for the steps that follow.
