Active Directory
A directory service commonly used to manage Windows identities, devices, and policy.
Active Directory Security
The practice of protecting Microsoft Active Directory, the on-premises identity service that authenticates users and controls access across most enterprise networks. Because nearly everything trusts it, compromising AD often means compromising the whole environment.
AD security spans hardening privileged accounts and group memberships, securing domain controllers, monitoring authentication for attack patterns, and planning for recovery if the directory is compromised. It is a high-value target, so defenders treat tiered administration and least privilege as foundational.
Introduced in: IAM Engineer Fundamentals
Examples
- Limiting Domain Admin membership and using separate admin workstations.
- Monitoring domain controllers for replication requests that indicate credential theft.
- Enforcing strong, regularly rotated passwords on service accounts.
