Analytical Tradecraft

The professional standards intelligence analysts use to produce sound, trustworthy assessments: distinguishing fact from inference, expressing confidence honestly, considering alternatives, and sourcing claims clearly.

Borrowed from the intelligence community, tradecraft keeps analysis rigorous so that consumers can trust and act on it. In a SOC context it shapes how threat intelligence reports are written, how confidence is stated, and how analysts avoid overstating what the evidence shows.

Examples

  • Labeling a conclusion 'moderate confidence' and explaining why.
  • Separating observed facts from the analyst's interpretation in a report.
