Data Mapping Process
The step-by-step method for building and maintaining a data map, discovering personal data, documenting its sources, flows, purposes, and storage, validating with stakeholders, and keeping it current as systems change.
Where the foundation explains what and why, the process is how: it walks through discovering where personal data lives (via interviews, system reviews, and scanning), recording each data flow and its lawful basis, validating findings with the teams that own the data, and establishing a cadence to keep the map accurate. A repeatable process turns data mapping from a one-time project into a maintained asset that privacy compliance depends on.
Introduced in: Privacy Law and GDPR Practice
Examples
- Interviewing system owners to discover where personal data is processed.
- Documenting each data flow with its purpose and lawful basis.
- Setting a review cadence so the data map stays current as systems change.
