Excessive Permissions
A cloud misconfiguration where an identity or resource is granted far more access than it needs, violating least privilege and giving an attacker who compromises it broad reach. It is one of the most common and dangerous cloud weaknesses.
Excessive permissions, over-broad IAM policies, wildcard access, unused but granted rights, mean that compromising one identity can expose far more than necessary. Because identity is the cloud's effective perimeter, over-permissioned roles and users are a leading path to large breaches and privilege escalation. Detecting and trimming them toward least privilege, often using IAM analysis tools, is a priority in cloud security and assessment.

Examples
- An IAM role granting wildcard permissions it never actually uses.
- A compromised over-permissioned identity giving an attacker broad reach.
- Trimming unused granted rights to move a role toward least privilege.
