External Communication

Communicating with parties outside the organization during an incident, customers, partners, regulators, and the public, in a coordinated, accurate way that meets obligations and protects trust while avoiding premature or damaging statements.

External communication during incident response covers everyone beyond internal teams: notifying affected customers, informing partners, meeting regulatory disclosure duties, and handling media or public statements. It is coordinated with legal and leadership, timed against notification requirements, and careful to share what is accurate without speculating or exposing the organization unnecessarily. Mishandled external communication can compound an incident's reputational and legal damage.
