FIDO2

An open authentication standard that enables strong, phishing-resistant, passwordless login using public-key cryptography and hardware or platform authenticators, such as security keys or device biometrics, instead of passwords.

FIDO2 lets a user authenticate with a private key held on a device or security key, proving identity to a service without a shared secret that can be phished or stolen. Because the credential is bound to the legitimate site and never transmitted, FIDO2 resists phishing, credential theft, and replay, the weaknesses of passwords and even many MFA methods. It underpins passkeys and is a leading direction for strong, user-friendly authentication.

Examples

  • Logging in with a hardware security key instead of a password.
  • Using device biometrics as a FIDO2 authenticator for passwordless sign-in.
  • Resisting phishing because the FIDO2 credential is bound to the real site.
