Kerberos Ticket Forgery Detection
Detecting forged Kerberos tickets, such as golden and silver tickets, that attackers create after compromising key material to impersonate users or services, by spotting anomalies the forgeries reveal.
Once attackers steal the right key material (like the krbtgt account hash), they can forge Kerberos tickets, golden tickets (forged ticket-granting tickets granting domain-wide access) or silver tickets (forged service tickets), to impersonate anyone with persistence. Detection looks for the anomalies forgeries produce: tickets with abnormal lifetimes, mismatched or missing account data, or use inconsistent with normal logon flows. It is an advanced directory-services detection countering powerful post-compromise AD attacks.
Introduced in: Directory Services Security
Examples
- Flagging a Kerberos ticket with an abnormally long lifetime.
- Detecting a golden ticket by inconsistencies in its account data.
- Spotting ticket use that does not match a normal logon flow.
