Unencrypted Storage

Cloud storage left without encryption (or with default keys only), a common cloud-foundational issue that exposes data to anyone who gains access to the storage layer or its backups.

Cloud storage services typically default to provider-managed encryption at rest, but unencrypted storage, public buckets with default keys, disabled encryption, missing encryption on backups, remains a common cloud incident cause. Cloud security foundations call for encryption at rest as a baseline, often with customer-managed keys for sensitive data, and for verifying that backups and snapshots inherit the protection. Recognizing unencrypted storage as a finding is essential cloud-security literacy.

Examples

  • Discovering a storage bucket with encryption disabled during a cloud audit.
  • Verifying that backups and snapshots inherit storage encryption.
  • Choosing customer-managed keys for sensitive data over provider defaults.
