Unmanaged Device Policy

Zero-trust policy that limits or denies access from devices the organization doesn't manage, BYO, contractor, personal, since unmanaged devices can't be trusted to enforce security baselines.

Zero-trust architectures distinguish managed from unmanaged devices because only managed ones can be verified to meet a baseline. Unmanaged device policy decides how those devices fit in: blocked entirely from sensitive resources, limited to specific apps, allowed only through a hardened broker, or required to enroll before access. As a ZTA topic, unmanaged device policy is one of the more contested practical questions, balancing security with flexibility for contractors, partners, and personal devices.

Introduced in: Zero Trust Architecture

Examples

  • Blocking unmanaged devices from sensitive applications by policy.
  • Allowing unmanaged devices only through a hardened browser-based broker.
  • Requiring enrollment before unmanaged devices can access sensitive resources.
