Containment Validation
Confirming that containment actually worked, that the attacker's access is cut off, the threat cannot spread, and no overlooked foothold remains, rather than assuming an action succeeded.
Containment that looks done may not be: an attacker may have multiple footholds, alternate credentials, or persistence that survives the first action. Validation verifies the threat is genuinely contained, checking that isolated systems stay quiet, revoked access cannot be reused, and no secondary access path remains, before moving to eradication. Skipping it risks declaring victory while the attacker is still inside.
Introduced in: Incident Response Operations
Examples
- Confirming an isolated host stops communicating with attacker infrastructure.
- Verifying revoked credentials can no longer be used anywhere.
- Checking for a secondary foothold before assuming containment is complete.
