Coverage Metrics

Measurements of how much of the relevant attack surface or technique space a defense actually covers, such as the share of MITRE ATT&CK techniques with a detection, or the percentage of assets monitored. They reveal blind spots.

Coverage metrics answer 'what are we not seeing?' by quantifying defensive reach: which ATT&CK techniques have detections, which log sources are collected, which assets are monitored. In blue-team operations they guide where to invest next and expose gaps that attackers could exploit unseen. They are most useful as a guide rather than a target, since a single weak detection can make a technique look covered when it is not.

Introduced in: Blue Team Operations

Examples

  • Reporting the percentage of ATT&CK techniques with at least one detection.
  • Measuring how many critical assets feed telemetry into the SIEM.
  • Identifying a tactic with no detection coverage to prioritize next.
