Detection Research

The investigative work a detection engineer does to understand an attacker technique before building a detection, studying how it behaves, what telemetry it generates, and how attackers vary and evade it.

Good detections start with research: an engineer digs into how a technique actually works, often using threat intelligence, public analyses, and hands-on testing, to learn what observable evidence it leaves, which log sources capture it, and how attackers might tweak it to evade. This understanding is what makes a detection accurate and robust rather than brittle, and it directly feeds the detection hypothesis and the logic that follows.
