Disk Encryption

Encrypting the contents of a storage device so the data is unreadable without the key, protecting data at rest if a device is lost, stolen, or improperly disposed of. Full-disk encryption is a baseline endpoint hardening control.

Disk encryption protects data at rest by keeping the drive's contents encrypted until unlocked with a key or credential, so a lost or stolen laptop or a discarded drive does not expose its data. Full-disk encryption (like BitLocker or LUKS) is a standard hardening measure for endpoints and servers, especially mobile devices. It defends specifically against physical access and improper disposal, complementing controls that protect running systems.
