Digital Signature
A cryptographic proof that data came from a private key holder and has not changed.
Double Extortion
A ransomware tactic where attackers both encrypt a victim's data and steal a copy, then threaten to leak it publicly, so paying only for decryption is not enough to prevent exposure. It pressures victims even if they have backups.
Traditional ransomware encrypted data, but good backups let victims recover without paying. Double extortion adds a second lever: attackers exfiltrate data before encrypting, then threaten to publish or sell it unless paid, so even a victim who restores from backup faces the threat of a damaging leak. This tactic has reshaped ransomware response, making data exfiltration and breach-notification obligations central, not just recovery.

Examples
- Attackers stealing data, then encrypting it, and threatening to leak the copy.
- A victim with good backups still pressured by the threat of public exposure.
- Ransomware response now treating the incident as a data breach, not just an outage.
