FedRAMP Authorization

The process and resulting status by which a cloud service achieves FedRAMP approval, completing a NIST 800-53-based control assessment and obtaining an authorization to operate so federal agencies can use it.

Framed within framework and control mapping, FedRAMP authorization is the rigorous path a cloud service follows to be approved for federal use: implementing the NIST SP 800-53 control baseline at the appropriate impact level, undergoing third-party assessment, and receiving an authorization to operate. Understanding it clarifies how FedRAMP maps onto 800-53 controls and where it sits among certifiable frameworks, distinct from the program overview.
