Attack Patterns

Recurring sequences of attacker behavior that show up across many intrusions, such as phishing for initial access followed by persistence and data theft. Recognizing them helps defenders anticipate an attacker's next move.

Rather than memorizing every threat, defenders learn the common patterns attackers reuse because they work, often described through models like the cyber kill chain or MITRE ATT&CK. Spotting an early step in a known pattern lets a defender predict and disrupt the rest.

Examples

  • Phishing leading to credential theft and inbox rule creation in business email compromise.
  • Double extortion: stealing data, then encrypting it for ransom.
  • Initial access followed by execution and lateral movement.
