On-Call Dynamics
The realities of being on-call for incident response, unpredictable disruptions, pressure to respond fast, fatigue, and impact on life, that affect responder effectiveness and wellbeing and must be managed deliberately.
On-call duty means being ready to respond to incidents outside normal hours, and its dynamics shape both response quality and responder wellbeing: unpredictable pages, the stress of high-stakes decisions while tired, disrupted sleep and personal time, and cumulative fatigue. Managing on-call well, through fair rotations, realistic expectations, escalation support, and recovery time, sustains an effective, healthy response capability. Ignoring these dynamics leads to burnout and degraded response.
