OpenTelemetry

An open standard and toolset for collecting telemetry, traces, metrics, and logs, from applications and infrastructure in a vendor-neutral way, giving consistent observability that also supports security monitoring in cloud-native systems.

OpenTelemetry (OTel) is a widely adopted, vendor-neutral framework for instrumenting systems to emit traces, metrics, and logs in a standard format, decoupling telemetry collection from any specific backend. In cloud-native environments it provides the observability foundation operators and security teams rely on, consistent traces across microservices, metrics, and logs, which supports detection, investigation, and performance work. Its standardization makes telemetry portable and integrable across tools.

Examples

  • Instrumenting microservices with OpenTelemetry for distributed traces.
  • Emitting metrics and logs in a vendor-neutral format via OTel.
  • Feeding OpenTelemetry data into security monitoring tools.
