Organizational Units

Containers within a directory (like Active Directory) used to group and organize users, computers, and other objects, so administration, policy, and delegation can be applied to logical groupings.

Organizational units (OUs) are subdivisions within a directory that hold and organize objects, users, groups, computers, into a logical hierarchy reflecting the organization. They are key administrative boundaries: group policy can be applied at the OU level, and administrative rights can be delegated per OU. Understanding OUs matters for identity administration and security, since OU structure and delegation affect how policy is enforced and where administrative control, and risk, is concentrated.
