Password Spraying
An attack that tries a few common passwords across many accounts to avoid lockouts.
Patch Testing
Verifying that patches work and don't break systems before deploying them broadly, balancing the security need to patch quickly against the operational risk that a patch could cause outages or incompatibilities.
Patch testing evaluates updates in a representative environment before wide rollout, checking that they install cleanly, fix the issue, and don't break applications or stability. It manages the tension at the heart of patching: security wants patches applied fast, but a bad patch can cause outages. Sensible testing, scaled to risk and urgency (more for major changes, expedited for actively exploited critical vulnerabilities), lets organizations patch promptly while avoiding self-inflicted disruption.
Introduced in: System Hardening Fundamentals
Examples
- Testing a patch in a staging environment before broad deployment.
- Confirming a patch doesn't break a critical application.
- Expediting testing for an actively exploited critical vulnerability.
