Persistence Hunts

Threat hunts that proactively search for attacker persistence mechanisms across the environment, looking for the autostart entries, tasks, and other footholds adversaries use to survive reboots and maintain access.

Persistence hunts target the tactic of maintaining access: hunters form hypotheses about how an adversary would persist and search telemetry across hosts for the signs, unusual scheduled tasks, new services, registry run-key changes, anomalous autostart entries. Because persistence is something attackers must establish and is comparatively durable, hunting for it can uncover intrusions that point detections missed. It is a high-value tactic-focused hunt within a hunting program.

  • Searching for anomalous registry run-key changes as persistence.
