Public Storage Buckets

A common cloud misconfiguration where object-storage buckets are set to public access, exposing data to the internet. A frequent, high-impact issue that posture management and assessment focus on.

Cloud object storage offers granular access controls, but bucket-level misconfigurations that make contents publicly accessible are a recurring cause of large data exposures. Sometimes accidental (broad default permissions), sometimes intentional and then forgotten, public buckets are continuously discovered by scanners and attackers. Detecting and remediating them, blocking public access by default, scanning for exposures, is a foundational cloud security control and a frequent assessment finding.

Examples

  • Finding a storage bucket set to public when it should be private.
  • Discovering sensitive data exposed via a public bucket.
  • Blocking public access by default to prevent accidental exposure.
