Purple Team Exercises

Collaborative exercises where red-team attackers and blue-team defenders work together openly, attacking and defending in real time to validate detections, improve response, and transfer knowledge.

Purple team exercises break the adversarial silo between red and blue teams: red performs specific techniques while blue watches detection and response unfold, then they discuss gaps, improve detections, and refine playbooks together. Compared with closed red-team engagements, purple teaming produces faster, more durable defensive improvement and shared understanding. As a blue-team operations practice, it is one of the highest-value ways to mature detection coverage and response, often built around ATT&CK techniques.

Introduced in: Blue Team Operations

Examples

  • Red running a specific technique while blue tunes detection live.
  • Walking through gaps and improving playbooks immediately after the test.
  • Building shared understanding of attacker tradecraft and defenses.
