Authentication Protocols

The standardized methods systems use to verify identity and exchange authentication information, such as Kerberos, SAML, OAuth, OpenID Connect, and RADIUS. Each has its own trust model and security considerations.

IAM engineers must understand these protocols because each governs how credentials and tokens are exchanged and where they can be attacked, from Kerberos ticket abuse to OAuth token theft. Choosing and configuring the right protocol securely is core to identity architecture.

Introduced in: IAM Engineer Fundamentals

Examples

  • Kerberos authenticating users within an Active Directory domain.
  • SAML enabling single sign-on to a SaaS application.
  • OpenID Connect providing identity on top of OAuth for a web app.
