Agent vs Agentless

Two ways to gather security data from cloud workloads. Agent-based methods install software on each workload for deep, real-time visibility, while agentless methods scan workloads from outside (for example via snapshots or APIs) for broad, low-friction coverage.

Agents see runtime activity and can block threats but add overhead and must be deployed and maintained everywhere. Agentless approaches deploy quickly and cover ephemeral or hard-to-reach workloads but typically lack real-time runtime detection. Most mature programs blend both rather than choosing one.

Introduced in: Cloud Workload Protection

Examples

  • Installing a runtime agent on production VMs to detect live process injection.
  • Scanning VM snapshots agentlessly to inventory vulnerabilities without touching the host.
  • Using agentless discovery to find unmanaged workloads, then deploying agents to the important ones.
