Device Trust in ZTA

The zero-trust principle that a device's identity and security posture must be established and continuously verified before it is trusted to access resources, so access depends on the device, not just the user.

Zero trust treats devices as untrusted by default: a device must be identified, shown to meet security requirements, and continuously re-verified to be granted access. Device trust complements user identity, recognizing that a legitimate user on a compromised or unmanaged device is still a risk. Establishing device trust, through device identity, health attestation, and compliance signals, is a foundational pillar of a zero-trust architecture.

Introduced in: Zero Trust Architecture

Examples

  • Requiring a device to prove its identity and health before granting access.
  • Treating a known user on an unmanaged device as untrusted.
  • Continuously re-verifying device posture rather than trusting it once.
