IAM Architecture Patterns

Reusable, proven design approaches for structuring identity and access management, such as hub-and-spoke identity, centralized versus federated models, or standard provisioning and SSO designs, that engineers adapt rather than designing from scratch.

IAM architecture patterns capture recurring, vetted ways to solve common identity design problems: how to centralize or federate identity, structure directories and trusts, implement single sign-on, or organize entitlements. Using established patterns helps an IAM engineer build sound, maintainable architectures faster and avoid known pitfalls, adapting a pattern to the organization's needs instead of inventing an untested design. They are the building blocks of practical IAM architecture.

Introduced in: IAM Engineer Fundamentals

Examples

  • Applying a centralized-identity pattern with federation to partner systems.
  • Reusing a standard SSO design rather than inventing one.
  • Adapting a proven provisioning pattern to the organization's systems.
