IAM Program Design

Designing the overall identity and access management program, its capabilities, processes, controls, roadmap, and governance, so identity is managed coherently across the organization rather than as disconnected tools and tasks.

IAM program design defines how identity will be run as a program: which capabilities to build (lifecycle, authentication, authorization, governance, detection), the processes and controls behind them, how they integrate, the roadmap to get there, and the governance to sustain them. Grounded in design principles and gap analysis, it turns scattered identity efforts into a deliberate, prioritized program that an IAM engineer can build and operate. It is the planning core of the IAM engineer's work.

Introduced in: IAM Engineer Fundamentals

Examples

  • Defining the capabilities and roadmap for the identity program.
  • Designing the processes behind provisioning, access, and governance.
