Account Disabling
A containment action that turns off a user or service account so it can no longer authenticate, cutting off an attacker's access while preserving the account and its logs for investigation.
Disabling is usually preferred over deleting because it stops access immediately while keeping evidence and making recovery easier. Responders weigh the disruption to the business (a disabled service account can break applications) against the risk of leaving the account active.
Introduced in: Incident Response Operations
Examples
- Disabling a compromised employee account during the first hour of an incident.
- Turning off a former contractor's lingering account flagged during a review.
- Temporarily disabling a service account suspected of being abused, after confirming which systems depend on it.
