Role Mining Methodology
Systematically deriving role definitions from existing access data and job-function information, top-down (from organization roles) or bottom-up (from entitlements analysis), producing roles grounded in real use.
Role mining looks at who has what access and what jobs they do, then derives role definitions that fit. Top-down starts from job functions and asks what access each needs; bottom-up clusters existing entitlements to spot natural roles. Both produce roles that reflect reality rather than guesswork. Methodology covers cleaning data, choosing the approach, validating with business owners, and iterating. It is an IGA practice central to standing up effective role-based access at scale.
