Assessment Kickoff

The opening of a security assessment where the assessor and client agree on scope, goals, timing, points of contact, and rules of engagement, setting expectations so the rest of the work runs smoothly.

A good kickoff prevents most downstream friction by aligning everyone on what will be assessed, how, and by when. It establishes communication channels and authorization, builds trust with the client, and surfaces constraints before they become problems mid-engagement.

Introduced in: Security Assessment Methodology

Examples

  • Agreeing on which systems are in scope and who can grant access.
  • Setting a communication cadence and escalation contact at the start.
  • Confirming written authorization before any testing begins.
