Asset Inventory for VM
A complete, current list of the systems and software in scope for vulnerability management. Without knowing what exists, scanning misses assets and vulnerabilities go unmanaged, so the inventory is the foundation of the whole program.
You cannot protect or scan what you do not know you have, which makes asset inventory the first dependency of vulnerability management. A good inventory tracks ownership, location, and criticality so scanning coverage can be measured and remediation can be assigned and prioritized by risk.
Introduced in: Vulnerability Management
Examples
- Discovering unmanaged servers missing from scan coverage and adding them.
- Tagging assets with an owner so vulnerabilities can be routed for fixing.
- Recording asset criticality to support risk-based prioritization.
