Business Impact Analysis

A structured process that identifies an organization's critical processes, what they depend on, and the consequences of disruption over time, producing the recovery priorities and objectives that drive continuity planning.

The BIA answers what would break, how badly, and how fast it must be restored. By rating criticality, mapping dependencies, and setting maximum tolerable downtime, it yields recovery time and point objectives that the rest of BC/DR is built around, making it the analytical foundation of resilience.

Introduced in: Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Planning, GRC Capstone: Building a Security Program

Examples

  • Determining that order processing must recover within four hours to avoid major loss.
  • Mapping which systems a critical process depends on.
  • Setting recovery objectives for each critical function from impact estimates.
