ATT&CK Coverage Mapping

Charting an organization's detections against the MITRE ATT&CK matrix to see which adversary techniques are covered, which are weakly covered, and which are blind spots, so detection effort can be focused.

Coverage mapping turns a scattered set of detections into a clear picture of strengths and gaps across tactics and techniques. It guides where to build next, but defenders treat it as a guide rather than a scoreboard, since one weak rule can color a technique as covered when it is not.

Introduced in: Detection Engineering

Examples

  • Color-coding the ATT&CK matrix to show covered versus uncovered techniques.
  • Identifying a tactic with no detections and prioritizing it on the backlog.
  • Reassessing a 'covered' technique after a test shows the rule is weak.
