Account Merging

In customer identity systems, the process of combining two or more identity records that belong to the same real person into a single account, for example when a user who signed up with a password later logs in with Google. Done carelessly, it can let one identity take over another.

Merging must verify that both identities truly belong to the same person, usually by confirming a shared verified email before linking. A weak merge flow is an account-takeover risk, because an attacker who controls one login could otherwise absorb a victim's existing account.

Introduced in: Customer Identity and Access Management

Examples

  • Linking a user's social login to their existing email-and-password account after verifying the email matches.
  • Consolidating duplicate customer profiles created across web and mobile signups.
  • Blocking an automatic merge when the social provider has not verified the email address.
