IPv6
Internet Protocol version 6: the newer IP addressing scheme using 128-bit addresses to vastly expand address space beyond IPv4. Defenders must account for it because it is often enabled by default and can create overlooked attack surface.
IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses, providing an enormous address space that removes IPv4's scarcity and reduces the need for NAT, written in hexadecimal groups. Security-wise it matters that IPv6 is frequently enabled by default alongside IPv4 (dual-stack), so a network may have IPv6 connectivity and exposure that defenders overlook if they only monitor and filter IPv4. Understanding IPv6 addressing is increasingly necessary for complete network defense.
