Routing Tables
Data structures routers use to decide where to forward each packet, mapping destination networks to next hops. Understanding routing tables is foundational to network defense and to investigating traffic paths.
A routing table tells a router how to reach known networks: each entry maps a destination (network or address range) to a next hop and outgoing interface, often with cost or preference values. Tables are built statically or by routing protocols. For defenders, routing tables matter when investigating unusual flows, configuring segmentation, or troubleshooting visibility gaps. Manipulating routing tables (e.g., via BGP hijacks or route injection) is also a known attacker concern.
