Follow-the-Sun
A SOC staffing model where monitoring and response are handed between teams in different time zones, so coverage follows daylight hours around the globe, giving 24/7 operations without overnight shifts for any single team.
In a follow-the-sun model, geographically distributed teams each work their normal daytime hours and hand off active work to the next region as their day ends, providing continuous 24/7 coverage while avoiding the burnout of permanent night shifts. It depends on strong handoff discipline and shared tooling so context is not lost between regions. It is one way mature, often global, SOCs sustain round-the-clock operations.
Introduced in: Blue Team Operations
Examples
- Handing off active investigations from a US team to an Asia-Pacific team at end of day.
- Achieving 24/7 coverage without any team working permanent nights.
- Relying on solid shift handoffs to preserve context across regions.
